Chapter Thirteen
By Omen-chan and Sakura-chan

“I repeat: Captain Yunho and crew of the Rising Sun, please exit your ship for questioning. These are the authorities.”

Heechul is livid. “And I repeat, there’s no way Yunho or any of them have anything to do with any situation that you’d be interested in! They’re the most boring, well-behaved people in the Lowers, shit.”

“Sir, please, we’re just trying to do our jobs.”

“I don’t give a fuck. You come in here, blasting shit over the public comm, and it makes it sound like Yunho’s done something illegal when he’s never done anything illegal in his life, and I’m about two seconds from making this less about him and more about you having to get surgery to remove my boot from your ass.”

“Sir, please.”

“You know, Heechul,” Yunho says calmly as he exits the ship, flanked by his crew. “You’re probably the only person alive that can talk shit to a policeman and get nothing more than polite exasperation.”

“It’s my pretty face. Too bad you don’t have one.”

The head officer steps forward, professionally deaf to their conversation, and says, “Are you Captain Yunho of the Rising Sun, sir?”

Heechul scoffs, but before he can say whatever witty, scathing thing he has on his mind, Yunho answers, “Yes, sir, I am. May I ask what this is about?”

“We have reason to believe you’re harboring two fugitives.”

Junsu frowns. Fugitives? Judging by Yunho’s face, the choice of words hadn’t gone by him either.

“I beg your pardon, sir? Fugitives?”

“That is correct. Two young men, one fifteen, the other sixteen, escaped from Beta Level two days ago. They were traced to Delta Level, but escaped with a stolen ID card when they were about to be taken into custody. We have since traced that stolen ID to Psi Level.”

“I see.” Yunho folds his arms over his chest. “And how did you happen to trace these… fugitives… to me?”

“We have a live witness, sir, stating that you took two unknown teenagers to your ship.”

Yunho bites his lip and glances over at Changmin. His young friend’s face is completely blank, obviously unsure which way Yunho is planning to jump. Yunho also knows that, whatever course of action he takes, Changmin will back him up fully.

Junsu might never forgive him, but…

Shaking his head, Yunho turns back to the officer. “I’m sorry, sir, but I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

“What? The witness-”

“We took two Psi Levelers in earlier. They’d been in a brawl, and one of them was in bad condition. My medic…” Changmin steps forward, still silent. “… decided he wanted to give them first aid care. I thought it was a waste of resources, but, well, I have no control over what goes on with my ship whenever my crew decides they want to stage a coups.”

“May we see these two, then?”

“They’re already gone. As I said, I allowed my medic to give them medical care, but there’s no way I would allow two Psi Levelers to stay on my ship. Much too dangerous.”

“We would still like to search your ship, with your permission.”

Yunho shrugs. “Be my guest, sir.” He exchanges a long look with Heechul. “Perhaps Captain Heechul would like to accompany you during your search.”

For a moment, the policeman looks stricken. “I really don’t think that… under the circumstances…”

“Well, clearly my crew and I will not be allowed on my ship while you conduct your no doubt thorough search. Captain Heechul knows the hidden crannies as well as almost anyone, so he may be able to be of some help.”

Heechul grins, not bothering to hide the maliciousness in it.

Jaejoong fingers Yoochun’s hair, hiding his fear. They’d been found. They’d been found, and they’d only managed to stay together for two short days. And now they were going to be separated all over again.

Yoochun presses his face into Jaejoong’s stomach. “We could try to run again.”

“Oh?” He can’t quite hide the sad, sweet smile at Yoochun’s constant optimism. “Where would we go this time?”

Turning over and moving up so that he can press their foreheads together, Yoochun grins. “Well, we are on a ship. We could steal it-”

“Commandeer, Yoochun.”

“Commandeer, whatever, means the same thing – and sail off. To, I dunno, an American city, maybe. Los Angeles II might be fun.”

“You better not be thinking about stealing my ship, you two,” Yunho says calmly, the infirmary door hissing behind him. “Not after you’ve apparently become members of my crew.”

“W- What? I thought…” Jaejoong grips Yoochun’s hand, hard. He doesn’t want to let the hope grow just yet, only to have it dashed. Why would these people…?

“And just so you know, no one uses the term ‘commandeer’ anymore.”

The police officer and his four subordinates had barely been gone for five minutes before they stepped back off the ship in an apparent hurry.

“Sir?” Yunho asks, polite and curious. “Is something wrong?” He suppresses a grin as he sees Heechul trailing out of the Rising Sun nonchalantly, grinning from ear to ear.

“Yes, I mean, um, no. Everything’s fine.”

“I take it everything is in order, then?”

“P- Perfectly. Everything, um, everything seems to be in order.”

Junsu seems to be trying not to laugh, so Changmin asks, “Are you sure? You certainly weren’t gone for very long.”

The policeman glances nervously back at Heechul. “Um, yes. That’s true. We’ve, um, we’ve been given new orders. N- New developments, and all that. Sorry for the trouble.”

Yunho nods, quite seriously. “Of course, sir. May I make a suggestion?”

The men, clearly desperate for an escape bid, nod hurriedly.

“Try going back to Delta Level. It’s possible these fugitives of yours are still there.”

Despite his anxiety, the officer says, “B- But… the
ID Card…”

Yunho waves a hand dismissively. “Oh, they probably swapped it with a different one elsewhere. Why on earth would Beta Levelers want to go to Psi Level?”

Outside, Kangin turns to Heechul. “Well?”

Heechul’s grin, if anything, deepens. “Well what?”

“How’d you do it?”

“Some things aren’t meant for children’s ears.”

Kangin sputters. “I am not-”

Patting Kangin’s head affectionately, Heechul says, “In this, my dear, you will always be the child.”

“What a load of bullsh-”

“And that’s why I’m the captain and you aren’t.”

Yunho hadn’t said anything else.

Jaejoong and Yoochun were beginning to tense. What, exactly, had happened? Was this strange captain going to hold them for ransom? What did he mean by being a part of his crew?

Jaejoong never had been any good at holding his tongue. “What the hell are you talking about? What’s going on?”

Yunho just crosses his arms over his chest and leans against the bulkhead, apparently deep in thought.

Sharing a long, confused look with Yoochun, Jaejoong clears his throat and starts to try again, only for a sudden jerking movement to nearly make him fall off the bunk.

Yoochun grabs Jaejoong’s shoulders automatically to hold him in place. “Are we moving?”

Finally looking up, Yunho gives them both a serious look. “I thought it’d be a good idea to get back to work for a while. Since I’m apparently carrying two fugitives.”

Aghast, the two runaways gasp.

Yunho takes in their expressions and nods to himself. He might not have taken the easiest road, but he could hardly just hand over these two children… (Not children, he reminds himself. The policeman had said they were around his age. They just seem young) ...these two people over to some existence they clearly felt the need to escape.

No one just chooses to go to Psi Level.

Yunho drags one more person onto the already full lift. The water is seeping in, and the screams from everyone around him are deafening, but after so long, he doesn’t even notice them anymore.

His captain grabs his shoulder, a clear message.

But just as he reaches over to shut the lift doors, he hears it. A cry. How he hears it over everything else, he doesn’t know, but he looks up and…

There. A boy, alone, crying, and only barely managing to hold onto floating debris.

Without thinking, he dives into the water.
