Chapter Ten
Written by Omen-chan and Sakura-chan

Psi Level is nothing like anything either of them had ever seen. In one sense, it’s better than what they expected. No raping and killing right in front of them, and everyone seems to keep their distance. But… they don’t belong here, and everyone is looking at them like they know it.

As soon as they stepped off the lift, they inadvertently moved as close together as possible. Hands clutching bags and trying not to look as out of depth as they feel, they try not to look around too much, but they can’t help it. The area around the lift isn’t a large, open area like Beta Level, with its carefully manicured lawns and clean pathways, or even like Delta Level, with it’s industrial air. Instead, it’s just a large room, about twenty feet long and ten wide with a single door on each wall, and there are booths set up as if at some sort of old-time market. No one is hawking their wares to them, but their eyes are flat and suspicious, and it makes the hair on the back of Yoochun’s neck stand up.

“Are you still sure this was a good idea?” he whispers to Jaejoong just to break the silence. He’s trying not to look at the walls of the room, which seem to have been white once upon a century and are now merely smeared with watermarks and other things that he would rather not identify.

Jaejoong just gives him a wry smile and says, “I never thought it was a good idea. It was just better than any other options we might have had.”

“You think so?”

Shifting closer, Jaejoong moves his bag from his right hand to his left, and reaches for Yoochun’s free hand, entangling their fingers. Yoochun’s shoulders relax, feeling immediately calmed. “It won’t matter once they trace where we took our stolen ID to. Who would ever follow us here?” Jaejoong’s expression turns teasing. “Now that you’ve beaten up a police officer, it might be a good idea to avoid any and all law enforcement.”

Yoochun doesn’t even bother trying to come up with a witty retort.

They were simply wandering from room to room, aimless and trying not to look as confused as they feel. Yoochun recognizes the carefully blank expression on Jaejoong’s face, his way of protecting himself from dangerous situations. When they were younger, he’d had to see that expression too often. He doesn’t want to see it now.

“Should I… buy us something to eat?” Yoochun looks doubtfully at one of the many market “stalls” lined against the wall of each room. It seems as if everyone in Psi Level were trying to make money the same way – selling something. Most were things neither of them had any desire to purchase, and they both hadn’t forgotten the stall they’d walked past in a hurry, the one selling children.

Jaejoong turns wide, expressionless eyes on Yoochun for a moment, and the younger boy can’t suppress a pang of fear at the thought that Jaejoong has to protect himself from his own lover too. But Jaejoong softens and gives him a smile and tugs on his hand with a roll of the eyes. “I’d rather not. Unless you like fried rat?”

Yoochun’s laughter is loud with surprise, and it echoes on the enclosed space, bouncing off walls and making him cut short. Everyone’s looking at them now, and the stares that are turned on him, and then Jaejoong, make him nervous.

“C-Come on.” Gripping hard on Jaejoong’s hand, he practically drags the boy on to the next room.

Changmin is digging through his cabinets. Overhead, under the counter, and, in a last desperate attempt to hope that they might be hidden somewhere, every other possible space on the ship. But to no avail.

Storming onto the bridge, he stands in front of the captain’s chair and folds his arms across his chest.

Yunho sighs. That posture mixed with that face were never a good sign, least of all on Changmin. “What is it?”

Junsu looks up, an expression of mischievous pleasure on his face. He hadn’t seen that look on Changmin in a long time, and he’s ready to sit back and enjoy the scene, like a spectator ready for the last round at a wrestling match. He hadn’t been able to have simple fun in a very long time. He’d woken up feeling better that morning, and other than the constant guilt pangs from kissing Changmin behind his best friend and lover’s back, he was in a good mood. Perhaps he’d just had a bug? Junsu focuses back on the others.

“You went shopping a couple days ago. Right?”

“… Yeah…” It’s almost humorous how the captain of their ship seems to be shrinking into his chair.

“Do you think you might have forgotten anything… important?”

“Did we? I don’t remember…”

Junsu chirps helpfully, “We bought a fish. Threw it on Heechul. And then I-”

Yunho interrupts quickly, “Yes, yes, we know what you did. Anyway, no, I don’t remember forgetting anything.”

“Of course you don’t remember. That’s what forgetting means.”

Junsu tries not to laugh, and wonders if he should go find some alcohol to settle back with true enjoyment. Changmin’s already being rude, and the fun can only increase from here.

Sighing again, Yunho just says, “Could you just tell me what I did wrong? What I forgot?”

“Do you remember maybe… injuring yourself on our last mission?”

“Yeah, of course. I’m not senile.”

“Clearly you are, old one.”

“I used my last bandage on you. Remember now?”

“… Oh.”

“Yeah. Oh.”

Junsu, shoulders shaking at the sight of Yunho trying to disappear into the floor, raises his hand and saves him. “My fault! We got thrown out of the store before we had a chance to buy everything. I guess they don’t like it when we throw fish we don't actually own on people. We bought it after, though!”

Yunho mutters, “Yeah, because they made us.”

“Yeah. But it was my fault! But then…” His eyes twinkle wickedly at Yunho. “… Our captain did order me to…”

They both grin evilly at Yunho.

“See, Captain? It is your fault!” Changmin says, clearly victorious.

Yunho hangs his head in defeat. “Fine. We’ll go shopping tomorrow.”

“Great!” Changmin turns on his heel to leave, but not before sharing a mischievous grin with Junsu.

Jaejoong freezes when he feels a clammy, unwanted touch on the back of his neck. He swallows, and can’t quite bring himself to turn around.

At Jaejoong’s sudden stop, Yoochun turns, mouth opening to ask what’s wrong, when he spots a large, sickly pale, tattooed, muscular man-creature with long, lanky hair and freakish white eyes touching his lover. “Who the fuck are you?” He tugs Jaejoong out from under the man’s touch and shoves him behind him protectively.

The man doesn’t even respond to the question, and just looks Jaejoong over from behind Yoochun, barely even taking in the boy between them. “How much.”

Swallowing, Yoochun manages to say in a voice that’s almost a growl, “He’s not for sale.”

“I’m willing to pay quite a bit. And he won’t last long here with you for protection. You won’t last long either.”

Yoochun’s hand curls into a fist. “And I already told you he’s not for sale.”

Face still completely expressionless, Jaejoong leans forward and whispers in Yoochun’s ear, “Don’t get in a fight here, Yoochun. It’s okay.” He curls his hands over the younger boy’s fist, gently prying his fingers loose.

Letting his hand relax, he still whispers back, “I’m not about to let people think that you’re property. Or worse.”

Jaejoong tugs on his hand, never once looking away from the threatening Psi Leveler, who’s watching their whispered exchange with blank eyes. His own eyes are dark and looking a bit like a cornered animal’s. “We should just get out of here.”

Finally, the man just says again, “I want him. How much?”

The people around them, trying not to watch the conversation, jump at Yoochun’s sudden yell. “And I thought I told you he’s not for sale! Get lost!”

The man narrows his strange, pale eyes. “Do not tell me to get lost. You are on my turf.”

Breaking into a run with Yoochun behind him, Jaejoong escapes into the next room. He doesn’t stop there, however, and just keeps running, occasionally changing directions, and they run through room after room in a blind panic before Jaejoong trips and lands in a sprawl.

Sitting up with an expression like it hadn’t even happened, he whispers, “He’s angry.”

Yoochun kneels down next to him and wraps an arm around him. “He can be as angry as he wants. I’m not letting anyone think you’re for sale.”

Jaejoong looks around, and then decides to tuck them both in a hidden area between two stalls, where they won’t be noticed immediately by anyone.

Automatically curling into Jaejoong’s side, desperate for his familiar warmth and comfort, Yoochun whispers, “Try to get some sleep, Jaejoong. I’ll keep watch.”

Shaking his head stubbornly, Jaejoong replies, “I’m not tired.”

“You need to rest. There’s no knowing what’ll happen if we both fall asleep at the same time, so we should take turns.”

“Then you sleep.”

They both glare at each other, tired and annoyed and tense and scared. Finally, Yoochun sighs and caves. “Fine. I’ll sleep first.” He closes his eyes and mutters, “Wake me in an hour.”

Jaejoong gives him a soft kiss, and then pushes Yoochun’s head down onto his lap. “I will. Now sleep.” He lets his fingers twirl through Yoochun’s bangs with a smile, the first he’s had in what feels like forever.

I'm really curious to know what level HoSuMin are on. I don't think it was mentioned before...? :3

Immediately curling into Jaejoong’s side, desperate for his familiar warmth and comfort, Jaejoong whispers, “Try to get some sleep, Jaejoong. I’ll keep watch.”
I think you meant Yoochun instead of Jae.

Awesome chapter. Can't wait for more. ^^

Yeah, I felt horrible writing that. I was writhing in guilt the whole time. It certainly seems like I don't give them a break, doesn't it? I'm so evil. ;_____;

I don't mind. It's nice to know that there are people out there that like my fic enough to wait for the next chapter. ^o^
ekkusuchanekkusuchan on June 19th, 2009 08:38 am (UTC)
but at least you let them have each other =) that should erase most of your evil-ness away xD

you're not going to let the comments influence the storyline or the way you write, right...? as much as i want to wail "no no no!! soulmates shouldn't be in so much pain and danger!! you evil writers you!!" while reading, it's all just a reaction that your writings managed to evoke in me. please don't mind me if my comments had gotten...annoying..or harsh...coz it's all because of the emotion i felt while reading ^^;;;

I started reading this last night, but got interrupted by a thunderstorm, so I had to finish it this morning...

This is wonderful. I love that you have taken the time to really think about the little things in this story: the escalation of poverty, the seperation of the classes, the reason behind what they are expected to wear. The title of the story seems also appropriate to the level of detail and thought you have put into this, and it shows in the way I got sucked into the story. I can really see what this world must look like, even without long, flowery descriptions.

I am hooked into the relationships in this story and the mysteries you are slowly unveiling. I will keep looking for updates as long as you keep writing! XDD

Oh, and by the way... I adore the way you have captured Heechul. Too many authors concentrate on the crazy side of him and not enough bother to portray his other facets as well. Kudos to you on that.

*fangirling over your comment wow*

Sorry, it's just that I almost never get in-depth comments like that. I'm so used to "awesome" or "wow, what's gonna happen next" or my least favorite "♥." So getting one like this just makes my year.

I love that you mentioned the actual setting, too, because I did put a lot of thought and effort into every single tiny detail. I wanted everything to make sense, in that way where most people don't even have to think about it. Enclosed cities with no real chance of escape? Of course they'd be terrified of disease. It was really important to me that everything just fit.

Some of the relationships actually took me rather by surprise. Changmin's character wasn't supposed to have such a large part so early on, but he just kind of elbowed his way in and went "I'M TAKING OVER, KTHANKS." I had no power over him whatsoever, and I think that's why he just became one of my favorite people to write. Characters that can do that just seem more real to me, and less two-dimensional. They shouldn't be controlled.

And thank you so much for liking my Heechul. It's one of my own pet peeves when people tend to ignore the softer side of him, and focus on the crack. The crack is awesome, yes, but there's simply more to him than that. (And I love writing every single one of those SuJu scenes anyway. XD)
saanrio: Heechul - Heartsaanrio on July 5th, 2009 05:16 pm (UTC)
I know what you mean!

I love and hate it when my characters decide they don't want to follow my plot... a Gravitation fic I was writing went from 16 parts to 30-something because the characters didn't want things to end so soon, apparently. lol

I do like all of your characterizations so far. Even creepy!guy. He may be creepy, but he is creepy enough that I got a few goosebumps when he showed up. Also, it kind of seems to me like he might be the same guy that Junsu and Yunho got Changmin from? I'll just wait and see on that one. : )
Omen-chan: Kohtaomen1x2 on July 5th, 2009 05:31 pm (UTC)

It's a definite love-hate relationship with your characters sometimes. But usually the love outweighs the hate. Changmin basically pulls me around by the nose, and I love it. I must be a masochist. XD

Oooooh, good. I'm glad creepy guy was creepy. It's just horribly embarrassing when you write someone who's supposed to be scary and just comes out as something else instead. In all honesty, he even creeps me out when I write him. I've been procrastinating on writing the next chapter, just because the idea of having to write him more gives me the shivers.

I've been reading this fiction the whole day today..since I was in the office, I couldn't make a fuss over it so I came back as early as I could to finish off the remaining chapters..Sorry for not commenting on the previous chapters ><

This is incredible. I don't usually follow a chapter-ed fic just because it usually got cut off so suddenly due to various reasons. I myself couldn't keep my head leveled on writing a long fic because new ideas will pop and burst the idea I've been trying to develop.

I'm amazed by the work you put into describing the whole setting. Even with the brief description, you already took me into a journey with your characters and I am already looking forward for the upcoming chapters. Your character live outside the box, really. Even if the usual trait of a character shows, you can still feel somewhat connection of the character and to the real person like what you did with Changmin and Heechul, and maybe even Jaejoong. The character seems to portrays the person in actuality...even if they only exist in this fiction.

I love Soulmate and hopefully they'll settle down soon! I'll try to wait patiently for your next chapter!
